The German consortium Bertelsmann will hand over to the Federal Archives of Germany this year the fake “Hitler diaries”, whose publication in the magazine Stern In 1983, it caused one of the biggest media scandals in the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. According to Thomas Rabe, CEO of Bertelsmann, “the delivery of the fake ‘Hitler diaries’ to the Federal Archives guarantees the proper protection and usefulness of this collection of sources on the history of the Federal Republic of Germany from the 1980s.”
In August last year, Bertelsmann commissioned the IfZ to conduct an independent scientific review of the magazine’s history. Stern, to which a study on the management of fake “Hitler diaries” was added in February. For Bertelsmann, the delivery, following the investigation commissioned by the IfZ, is “a further step in our treatment of the company’s history oriented towards transparency, scientific character and independence”, Rabe emphasized.
Number 18/83 of Stern extremely advanced and edition with the title Hitler’s diaries revealed appeared on Monday, April 25, 1983, instead of Thursdays, as usual. The previous Friday, the weekly published the news that it has 60 volumes of Adolf Hitler’s diary.
They were presented at a press conference in Hamburg, and the first excerpts were published in issue 18/83. However, experts have already expressed doubts about the authenticity at the press conference. On May 6, after a thorough examination, the Federal Archives announced that the alleged “Hitler diaries” published by Stern they were fake.
