The most successful metal band of all time has released a new album. “72 Seasons” is the name of Metallica’s bright yellow disc. The 72 seasons represent the first 18 years of life around which the songs must revolve. Anyone hoping for a hint of the ’80s thrash sound played by then young forwards and California draggers will be disappointed. The heavy metal band is trying to weave some new ideas into their tried and tested sound over the past few years. But the bottom line is that the album remains uninspired. Guitarist Kirk Hammett torments himself and listeners with solos, none of which fit in the head. The songs are too long, often monotonous, almost boring.

However, there is something definite about them. If the album had come from a new artist, it wouldn’t have been half as good. Part of that something comes from the unmistakable voice of singer James Hetfield, part of the well-known heavy guitar tone. Anyone who was able to make friends with the short-haired, dark rockers of the 90s will also like the new record. 72 Seasons is bad, no question, but not bad enough. If you do not listen critically and do not compare, then it just sounds like Metallica, and the head starts to shake joyfully.
