The parallels are obvious: Brienz in Grisons and Mitholz in the Bernese Oberland. The two villages overlook the building of the mountains. The danger lurks in the rocks. For as long as you can remember, there has always been something going on in Brienz. Meanwhile, in Mitholz, the remnants of ancient munitions threaten to be detonated or contaminate the groundwater. The people of both places probably have only one choice: they must leave their homeland.
But that’s where the similarities end. While the federal councilor Viola Amherd addressed the residents of Mitholz with a sensitive video message, the mayor of the municipality, Daniel Albertin, took care of the problems of the residents of the village of Brienz. He is good at it, he finds the right words when he says: “We will not leave you alone.”
However, Bern’s absence from the Albula Valley is annoying. In Mitholz, the army is to blame; in Brienz, man-made climate change contributes to the fact that the mountain ranges begin to roll harder and harder. In Mitholz the federal government allocates millions, but who will pay for the departure to Brienz is still completely unknown.
Evacuation is a very emotional thing. The Russian writer Dostoevsky writes that being without a home means suffering. “We cannot replace your homeland, but we want to find fair and good solutions together,” Amherd said in Mitholz. It would be nice if the state government made Brienz a top priority.
