Detail of the gallo piñeiro festival in O Pino. Author: Sandra Alonso
May I always eat country eggs like the best in the world. They grew pitas in the house with their own corn that I planted, supplementing their diet with vegetables from the horta and natural bread with fochica that they prepared in the large horta that was behind the house. Galiñeiro was composed around the dunha ducia de galiñas and was a very repoludo Gaul. Pies were very different from each other, there were white, brown, black, without feathers and fish… but they always performed their function. I’ve never paid much attention to them, but to be very clear, those punched eggs set a high bar compared to the two punched while being bred the other day.
In the house of Niñodaguia, there were always galiñeiros tied to the passage of two meus avós, and pitas, as well as cows, pigs and bellies were also part of that natural universe that was the village. As time passed, and living in the current house, a friend gave me half a dozen pies and a Gala piñeira breed. At the time, I had no idea that it was an iso of the Pineapple breed and I became interested in the subject. The original Galiñas are still not officially recognized in the official breed catalog of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, as if they do not exist in Mos (San Xiao de Mos, Castro de Rei, Lugo), but for which different groups have been wandering for years.
It was in 1998 when the veterinarian Xesús García Rodríguez promoted the recovery of these pies from the observations and research he carried out on a farm in the Arzúa region. Thanks to this starting point and the work of various associations, this breed of poultry has recovered, is prestigious and is gaining official recognition that is overdue. And they are called pole seen pineapple The color and shape of the feathers resembles a pineapple, although there are also variants and even white ones. Or case é that naquel galiñeiro chegamos ter duas niñadas de seven dicks each, two who barely overtook a couple of whales because they didn’t have the proper acquaintances. Even among those pies was a very beautiful and cuddly white hawk that loved to be petted and petted. Long live pineapple pies and all indigenous Galician breeds.
