Switzerland will not allow other states to transfer military materials purchased from it in the future. Not even to Ukraine. The decision of the National Council this week is a political act of international importance because of the global attention.

Switzerland is Switzerland is Switzerland!

What is this ostentatious Swissness? In sovereignty, our favorite foreign word, which is as much part of the Bernese-German vocabulary as it is of Appenzell. Politicians use it in their mouths as if they used to know it “mom” and “dad” – like the first word in the world.

That is why we are now at odds with half of the world, primarily with Europe, of course: our sovereignty must be protected from
Attacks from the European Union, especially against its jurisdiction, on all fronts, to use another commonly used phrase. This would be an appeal to a historical maxim deeply rooted in the Swiss soul:

No foreign judges!

Yes, the reality of the world around us determines the happiness and sorrow of Swiss reality. Nevertheless, we like to think of ourselves as belonging only to those parts of the world that seem useful to us.

The world around us.

We are in the center.

A proud image, this image of oneself. The outside world also admires her for her true worth, because this is an extremely successful nation that boasts of it – not only competent, but also creative, and also possessing a valuable world currency. If you don’t know anything about Switzerland, you have already heard about the Swiss franc.

But one who cherishes and maintains such proud self-confidence must also have a strange feeling that other nations value sovereignty, self-determination. This inverse conclusion from the Helvetian self-view to the foreign view is obvious – isn’t it?

Unfortunately no. Not at all in the current war in Ukraine.

How?

Switzerland refuses to transfer military equipment equipped with or entirely composed of Swiss products to countries. If you’re mentally fresh, like us Swiss, you don’t have to think long to realize that Switzerland, for example, is ignoring German sovereignty. It is Bern that determines the actions of Germany in relation to Ukraine in this way.

That Switzerland is doing exactly what it would never agree to – taking control of other countries.

Switzerland as a foreign judge!

Renunciation of Swiss-made military equipment in the deadly practical case of war also means interference in the sovereignty of Ukraine: we politically consciously prevent the heroic resistance of a nation that is bombed every day and hour against a criminal regime.

We despise in Ukrainians what we proudly proclaim for ourselves: popular sovereignty.

We sons of Tell!

Yes, those who sit in the mountains like to look at the world from above.

And he sees far below the peoples who are not indifferent to the liberation struggle of Ukrainians: as petitioners to Switzerland for military materials that they bought from us, as petitioners to Switzerland to be allowed to help Ukraine. Ukrainians as petitioners to Switzerland to be allowed to fight for freedom with military equipment of Swiss origin.

If you like this Switzerland, step forward – Putin.
