Publishing house Shinchosha, which has hinted that it could be a mystery story, assures that the book reflects “100% Murakami’s world and makes the soul tremble”.

The new novel by Japanese writer Haruki Murakami, which will be published in Japan on April 13, will bear the title The city and its precarious walls (The City and Its Precarious Walls), according to its editorial, Shinchosha, revealed this Wednesday.

The publishing house also published the cover that the novel will carry in Japan, on which you can see some kind of passage, as well as a brief description of the plot that hints that it could be a mystery story.

“You have to go to this city. At the cost of everything. As in a long-ago dream, a hidden shelf is opened and a sealed story awakens that begins to move,” says the publisher, who says this book 100% reflects Murakami’s world and makes the soul tremble.

The novel of about 1,200 pages will be the author’s first in six years, after it was published in 2017. Killing the Commendatore (Death of the Commander), and the first that was simultaneously published on paper and in electronic form.

April 13th will be the release date in Japan, where it will be sold at a price of 2970 yen (about 21 euros), but the release date in other countries is not yet known.

Born in Kyoto, Murakami (74) made his literary debut with his novel Hear the wind sing (Listen to the Song of the Wind, 1979) and is known for works such as Norwegian wood (Tokyo Blues, 1987), Kafka on the shore (Kafka na obali, 2002) or the latest 1Q84 (2010) and Men without women (Men Without Women, 2014).

His works have been translated into more than 50 languages, and his career has been honored with numerous awards, including the Noma, Tanizaki, Hans Christian Andersen, Franz Kafka and Jerusalem Prizes.
