Do you ski? It’s good, you have the best hobby in the world. They leave fresh footprints in deep snow, press their edges into perfectly groomed slopes and sway to the tunes of hits in the après ski bar.
But happiness, it is fleeting, it melts. And most importantly: it depends on you how long you can go down the slope.
Valley descent below 1000 meters is already a rarity today. By the end of the century, average snow depth is likely to decrease by 70 percent. At the same time, we need an incredible amount of material for our hobby. A material that requires energy and resources.
And you don’t fly on vacation, maybe to the Dominican Republic, because it’s so nice and warm there? Can’t do without a good steak and a second car? But all together does not work. Gone are the days when you always wanted more.
Let’s listen to each other on Christmas Eve instead of showering each other with gifts. Let’s face it, ski pants last longer than a year. Let’s face it, overconsumption harms us and the environment.
This is not a guarantee that we will be able to ski in the future – after all, we are not alone in the world. In any case, we shouldn’t complain about having to give up our hobby because of the lack of snow if we don’t want to limit our consumption to a healthy level. The prospect of shouting “completely detached” into the evening mountain sky for a long time to come should be incentive enough for us. So: moderate yourself!
