Jesus is sad because he has little time left until he dies. He is in the prime of life, thirty-three years old, and in the power of that time They can’t resist seeing so much innocence, so much truth in his words, so much divine power that he heals, casts out demons, raises the dead, multiplies loaves, calls multitudes, reveals truths, and that’s why they decide to kill him.
Satan has moved the hearts of the envious, lovers of money, proud of fame and power, to seek a way to remove the master. And he makes those gentlemen deceive the people and make them believe it Jesus is a blasphemer, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend tax collectors and sinners, promoters of armed uprisings, to the extent that the same ones who welcomed Christ in Jerusalem with palm branches and cheers, a few days later demand his crucifixion.
And Jesus will say goodbye to his dear friends, his disciples, at dinner, an intimate moment where food is a way to share deep feelings of friendship, compassion and brotherhood. And how does he do it? Well, he will use his divine power to perform a unique, sublime, transcendental act of love: the bread and wine that are on the table will be transformed into his body and blood, into his own person, and giving them food and drink, the disciplesthey will receive the same person of Christ. At that moment, Jesus is in front of them presiding over the meal, and also in their hearts, in their persons. The miracle of love. Jesus is leaving this world, but he will remain forever.
Every time the Eucharist is celebrated in the world, there there will be Christ, his soul, his body, his blood and his divinity. He leaves but stays. It is like someone who says goodbye to a family member, friend for a long time and leaves him a memory, something significant, like his book, rosary, pen. Jesus leaves physically, but remains in another way, spiritually, but real, authentic. This is beautiful. His whole being in the Eucharist.
In reality, it is a tense moment, because the atmosphere feels that Jesus’ enemies are plotting something malicious, sinister, diabolical. But at the same time, partaking of the real presence of Jesus, his body, his soul, his blood, his divinity, joy is immense, The experience is sublime, everyone is as if in ecstasy transported to heaven itself and they know that Christ is with them intimately and forever. And the Eucharist was instituted as a sacrament and the priesthood as a means chosen by the Lord for this miracle to happen continuously.
