Commentary on Nati’s collection: Now the old people have to figure it out

At the European Championships, it’s up to the old guys to do it, says Blick football boss Finkbeiner.

When Murat Yakin took office in 2021, he was also tasked with initiating changes in Nati. 80 days before the start of the European Championships, it is clear that generational change has stalled. Performances in Dublin and Copenhagen show that the guys have not yet progressed as far as they had hoped.

Former contenders such as Fabian Rieder and Ardon Yashari are further away from the team than they were at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Noah Okafor and Zeki Amdouni, who started their careers brilliantly at Nati under Yakin, are not yet among the world’s top class. Dan Ndoye is a small ray of hope.

So the veterans will once again have to pull the coals out of the fire. The generation of Sommer, Xhaka, Shaqiri and co has reached the knockout stage at every finals tournament since 2014. All of them have 80 or more caps and, with the exception of Shaqiri, they are all still regulars in the top 5 leagues. Your international experience is irreplaceable.

The problem gets worse in storms, and a lack of goals could also leave Steven Zuber and Haris Seferovic with slim European Championship hopes once again. They also belong to the old guard and have also fought in many battles with Nati. “There are no young and old players, there are only good and bad players,” Otto Rehhagel once said. This also applies to the national team – especially at the European Championships.
