bottled joy

The smell of distant rain floods the land, the sea breeze removes the stress from the beachripe fruit covering your palate with sweetness, the smile of complicity between lovers, the caress of the voice of someone who loves you.

The examples are getting longer to a horizon covered in possibilities.

From the most delicate little things to the most perverse sins, the variety of situations, opportunities, luxuries and whims that give us happiness It is a long chain of infinite combinations. We run away from the exhausting spell of life that runs away from us together with small seconds where we live again, those moments when we feel that time stops and we are reborn under a cloud of contentment.

But there is agony, the anxiety of knowing that the moment is ending, bitterness to know the death of pleasure. The problem is hidden in the fine print, hidden among so much dirt. Modern time, the present second, is a realm of uncontrolled and unregulated hedonism that blurs the balance. We are wrapped in the shroud of immeasurable pleasures, the eternal enjoyment it seeks tear us out of our consciousness. We bring together the reality of life in an imperfect world, but really, with the utopia of binary universes. And that’s not a criticism of the times we live in, it’s an empty phrase. But perhaps some light on this question will reveal the traumas of a society condemned to suffer pleasant punishments.

Now we have everything at our disposal, sex, food, disturbances; We cover all, or almost all, of Maslow’s pyramids with little more than a few finger movements. And that is not bad, nor is it bad at all. But we do not know how to weigh the scale, we are mortal and we love joy. We bathed in the sweet waters of Ogygia and spent eternity with Calypso, lost our way and wandered away from home.

This is the reason for the birth of so many support groups, so many gangs and fraternities. Young people, most affected by the scourge of pleasure, are looking for meaning in this turbulent sea and alone They are met with frustration and hopelessness. Those lost in the dark waters where their Argos was shipwrecked are rescued by petty tyrants with Manson-like pretensions. They pick them up and take them to become part of their crew. And what they say is not new either, we have been discussing the same thing for at least 5000 years.

Because constant joy leads to chronic sadness. We are not made to suffer from constant joy. Because alcohol intoxicates you, food fills you up and sex is tiring, but that’s okay excess becomes necessity and loses the mystique that made us happy. We repeat the cycle over and over again, day after day, to endure the weight of the artificial need, the guilt that has become a parasite.

Because we cannot survive the boredom of the day without what we use to soften the edge of the hours. What makes us seek refuge in pleasure is the loss of control, the surrender to these pleasures. But until recovery is one decision, it is a step that is not easy, but it is very desirable. It was expressed in the Vedas and the Bible, by Stoics and Sadhus, Socrates and The Buddha, the control of one’s being, the imposition of reason over feelings makes this little time that is our life a much more tolerable ride. Once we put ourselves in front of the most useless distractions, we will realize that this life we live is nothing more than imperfectly achieving one’s own sentences.
