Was it stupidity or a serious mistake? The fact that the army completely unexpectedly fell into a billion-dollar financial hole causes great irritation in parliament. Fair enough!
The army commander’s attempts to explain the situation are only half convincing. After all, it has long been clear to the military that there will be little financial flexibility in the coming years, especially due to new fighter jets. At home, finance officials are said to have warned that the gap between arms purchases and available budgets will widen.
It is suspected that the army was quickly counting on much more money due to the war in Ukraine. Money that will now be paid over a longer period of time than expected. A year ago it became clear that investments could not be implemented so quickly. However, hundreds of millions were again included in the budget. It seems as if a person with full vision is caught in a dilemma.
The financial hole also appears to be creating problems within the company’s ranks. The Department of Defense indicates to the outside world that the Army is solely responsible. The head of VBS herself, Viola Amherd, assured the National Council two years ago that an increase in the army budget is possible without saving and raising taxes. How it was supposed to work remained her mystery even then.
Now the army leadership has to juggle its finances to find a way out of this dilemma. One thing is clear: parliament should not interfere and allocate even more money to the army, otherwise it will have to be saved elsewhere. And most importantly, one thing is certain: under no circumstances should such an approach become a precedent.
