Politicization of the judiciary

Current situation in Panama requires effective management by the Government. However, the fact that the current chaos is being used as a smokescreen to avoid noticing one of the biggest attacks on our democracy is worrying: the attempt to disqualify the strongest opposition candidate. This raises questions about the integrity of the democratic process and the impartiality of justice.

Speeding up the judicial process at a time of social and political unrest raises questions about the motives behind these actions. Not only is it essential to respect the fundamental principles of democracy, but the will of the majority expressed by votes at the polling stations must be respected and not eliminate the strongest candidate.

Politics and justice must work for the benefit of society, and any attempt to use them for other purposes undermines trust in democracy. Citizens have the right to a free and fair political process, where our voice is heard and respected. In times of crisis, transparency and integrity are even more important for the well-being of the country.

However, justice in Panama is once again in the midst of a context that some describe as alienation. The controversy revolves around court decisions and clear political pressures surrounding the New Business case, where many claim that President Cortizo and his Vice President Gaby Carrizohe pressed for the ratification of Judge Marquínez’s decision, without considering the recognized protection of guarantees.

He PRD has been accused of using tactics reminiscent of the old manuals to divert attention from their plight. By speeding up the cases against Ricardo Martinelli, they are trying to find a way to save themselves from the abyss in which they found themselves. The speed with which these procedures were carried out raised doubts.

This second-instance verdict, in addition to disqualification, seeks to exercise control over Epasa’s newspaper. Does he intend to silence the press? What is the purpose behind this action, especially in the midst of the crisis affecting Panama?

Several legal experts questioned the ruling in the New Business case, despite the protective suspension accepted by the Court. This raises serious questions about the independence of the judicial system and the impartiality of its decisions.

The saddest thing is that Ricardo Martinelli’s conviction was celebrated by mediocre opponents who only make it even more clear that their desire for power is above democracy and the will of the people, and that they are ready to do anything to win. This raises questions about political ethics and respect for the will of the majority, which is reflected in the polls. Politics in Panama is in a state of turmoil and it is essential that citizens remain informed and vigilant in these critical times.

He former president Martinelli has condemned that the current government has decided to try to distract Panamanians with a second-instance ruling seeking to nullify his candidacy in 2024, instead of intelligently addressing the social crisis facing the country.

Unfortunately, Panamanian politics remains a complex and controversial terrain.
