Citizens’ Council! A refreshing term in these times of political chaos. To a sensitive democrat, this sounds delicious. A responsible citizen grabs his word as a life preserver. At least that’s how the Citizens’ Assembly is intended: as the consummation of democracy.

And then the miracle word becomes a miracle: 100 randomly selected people discuss a current popular issue in society, for example, the Swiss diet, i.e. sustainable eating, which, as we know, is a decisive factor on the vegetable shelf. retailer It all starts, if not with the farmer’s choice of growing method.

The citizens’ assembly must now present findings on exactly this issue, with the aim of making healthy, sustainable, animal-friendly and fairly produced food available to everyone in Switzerland by 2030. So the goal is clear from the very beginning. Councils selected by lot only have to provide confirmation, although they have also already passed the targeted selection.

Behind the activities of the Citizens’ Assembly is a network of sustainable development, including organic food and drink, as well as climate interests, including climate strike activists – in short: the lobby to save people and save the world. Eleven meetings of the food parliament are scheduled until November, at which “recommendations” will be made to politicians and the administration. The Federal Government will support this venture with 0.4 million francs.

Citizens’ council? Citizens’ council? The camouflage is perfect: it seems as if the people of the people have finally been allowed to consider the issues of the times through debate within a manageable framework – almost intimate compared to established politics. Experts are ready to help you.
Experts?

Yes, scientists, experts from universities, non-governmental organizations, and if necessary and inevitable, also from churches. Whatever needs to be discussed, academically enlightened people from all backgrounds are ready to give the lay council direction.

This is what it is about: the instrumentalization of politics by a guild that feels that it is not given enough attention, that wants to achieve a meaning that it has until now had to evade because democratic institutions have not thrown themselves at its feet. Now we should introduce something that elevates democracy to the level of scientific knowledge, to the level of truth of knowledge on all existential issues.

Expertocracy instead of democracy – finally it became possible thanks to the Citizens’ Assembly!

In fact, there are not enough sandboxes for masters, which are hatched every year in more and more curriculums, especially in newly invented subject areas. In Germany, for example, where the Citizens’ Council is also touted as a blessing to democracy, there are 173 chairs in Gender Studies – so the creation of Citizens’ Councils for Gender Studies is urgently needed!

Unfortunately, democracy is not particularly suited to an academic guild seeking influence and income. Citizens’ councils are designed to correct this deficiency: the elite of the lecture hall are democratically heard and elevated by the regulars.

The charming term “Citizens’ Council” is lazy magic. Democracy has always functioned through councils: city council, local council, grand council, cantonal council, government council, national council, state council – councils of citizens at all levels of decision-making in society. In addition, referendums and popular initiatives – citizen councils – have a special number; if they are approved, they are even mandatory.

Democracy is an assembly of citizens!
