Claude Cueny on Germany: The train is going nowhere

In 1972, people were still singing the anthem of Germany, the engine of the economy. 50 years later, Christian Anders’ hit from that time is still relevant: “The Train Is Going Nowhere.” The German cavalry is lame, the Internet is lame, the economic engine stutters, the infrastructure is a disarray, there are more Dixie toilets than workers on construction sites, official procedures are as Kafkaesque as in the Philippines, Cologne New Year’s Eve is held all year round, people without education flock to the country, German qualified workers fly abroad. More and more Germans are becoming illiterate, more and more illiterate people are becoming Germans. Passive Chancellor Scholz calls nuclear power a “dead horse”, and now he is importing a dead horse.

According to the OECD, Germany is now in last place among the G7 countries. Government overregulation and ideological narrow-mindedness paralyze everyday life. The population is now also experiencing deindustrialization due to huge energy costs. Purchasing power is dwindling. 73 percent believe that the worst government of the post-war period is unable to achieve its objectives. “When I think about Germany at night, I lose sleep” (Heine).

US News’s 2023 Best Countries Report once again named Switzerland the best country in the world based on 73 criteria. Although we are more successful on all social, political and economic issues than the net contributor to the European Debt Union, we allow ourselves to be intimidated by “our friends”. We allow ourselves direct democracy, Germany would never dare to do this, the government has long said goodbye to the population. The only thing ahead of the political elite in the north is 178 chairs in gender studies and the audacity to claim leadership in Europe.

Helmut Schmidt (SPD) warned in 1980: “Anyone who votes Green will blame himself bitterly later.” Greens such as Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock (“No matter what my constituents think”) and Economy Minister Robert Habeck (“What is bankruptcy”) are not solving any problems. They rename them and travel around the country along the wall with gender equality in mind. AfD can save money on election advertising.
