The first school of magic was born in Vigo

Author: GRANTED

The training center opening July 15 in Casco Vello will also host shows

Carlos Tomico ever since he was a child, he knew that wand magic touched his heart. He thought it would get him nowhere and wanted to get rid of that fantasy like Houdini’s padlock that bound him inside the straitjacket. He was busy with other things. He studied translation, a master’s degree in comparative literature and another for teaching, but it was impossible. The magic reached him and he surrendered to the evidence. I said to myself: ‘Come on, let’s give ourselves a chance,’ he admits.

Tomico, a 31-year-old from Pontevedra who lives in Vigo, is starting a big adventure in two weeks, launching the first magic school in Vigo together with the other two components of the company Magia en la Manga, Sara Rodríguez and Oscar Fernándezfrom Vigo at the age of 33 and 29, who love it, after training in various environments, from theaters to schools and cafes with cultural programs such asl From Catra to Catrawhich is the home of illusionists from Vigo.

After several years of separate experience, the professionals decided to unite “because we share the same vision of professional magic, the same artistic concerns and the same passion.” They did well, survived the pandemic and encouraged more. The company from Vigo was part of the municipal program this year VigoCulture. they ran the show The best magic trick in the world. Now they are taking another step in this company which they started with another member, Julio Merinobut for various reasons it will not be in the training project, although it will be one day.

The school, which will be named after the company, opens on July 15 in ul Calle Ferrería number 11. It will be in one of the spaces subsidized by the Casco Vello Consortium, which allow entrepreneurs to launch projects in different sectors, from fashion to audiovisual creativity, and energize the neighborhood recovered after the renovation of many buildings.

The school, the first of its kind in the city, aims to become “a point of reference for quality illusionism at the local, regional and national level,” he says, adding that in many cities across the country “there are specialized magic rooms where you can regularly attend shows with illusionists. Until today, Vigo has not had a space dedicated exclusively to this art where you can not only enjoy the magic with local artists and others of national and international renown, but also learn some of the best kept secrets to become protagonists.

If Sara, Óscar and Carlos have something extra, it is an illusion. They invested everything in this project and are convinced that there is room in Vigo for a center like theirs, since Magia en la Manga will offer activities adapted to different ages and different interests, from everyone who wants to socialize and learn some tricks that will teach them at family or friendly gatherings, to those who intend to start or perfect their professional path. “We designed programs adapted to the circumstances and knowledge of each candidate. We also see that there is a lot of interest, a lot of fans and it works very well in other cities”, he says. Apprentices will also have a small stage where they can hone their skills and practice up close and salon magic in front of an audience.

Each of the members of Magia en la Manga has his own style. Tomico, a classic in dressing, likes to define his as “magic with sloppiness”. Oscar looks vanguard but with a distinct influence of the great classical and modern masters, although it offers a more modern and mischievous face for the family audience. And Sara’s great passion, which she left engineering to have ace up his sleeveis card magic, which she elevates to a higher level thanks to her meticulousness and attention to detail, as anyone who sees her with a deck in hand and enjoys her smart, understated humor can attest.

Classes

Enrollment in your school is not yet open. “It will be launched from Saturday, July 15, on the opening day which will be the opening party, and during the day the school will be open to all people who want to know more about the new space, its promoters and future activities. And of course, there will be magic in the event.
