My boyfriend is incredibly romantic. Since we only have four days off this summer, he has planned a surprise vacation for us during this time. mentally, right? Actually, I wasn’t supposed to know where he went until the deadline, but he slipped out during a dinner together.

“We’re flying to Antalya,” he announced with a mischievous smile and several glasses of wine. I stopped spitting. I wasn’t sure if it was joy or shock.

There are two types of vacationers in my environment: those who go on vacation and those who don’t. My friend belongs to the first category, and I to the second. Of course, we both know that flying itself is bad for the climate. We also both know that it doesn’t really matter if you get on a plane from time to time. When I travel far for a longer period of time, even I can get rid of the shame of flying.

But for four days? Opinions were divided. “I just searched the Internet for the cheapest suitable offer!” dot for it. For students with low-paid part-time jobs, this is one of the main criteria when it comes to vacation. And Antalya was cheaper than a holiday in Ticino.

But I care about the principle. We need to signal by not supporting these short flights. Change of goals, future, responsibility?!

“You could just stay on the balconies,” some friends warn when I talk about an unexpected trip that was no longer there. It was clear that my four-day holiday in Antalya would be a talking point among my friends. Others answered: “Well, do not speak to him with remorse – he wanted good!”

I sit between them and get more and more frustrated. Because everyone is right! Science shows that flying is not good. But there is too little time and money to take the train. And the deals from the airlines are just a lot more enticing than the range offered by Deutsche Bahn, which is probably so late you’ll miss your connection.

But the most frustrating thing is that the solution to the problem has been on the table for a long time – but so far it has been removed by all those responsible in the bottom box with the inscription “not urgent”. Subsidies and Innovations for Trains & Co. The climate, my shame of flying and my relationship will thank you.
