Gray after gray

It seems contradictory that all those shows set in emergency rooms where life and death are sometimes so intertwined that it’s hard to tell them apart are so long-lived. The longest-running hospital series (courtesy of doctors Greene and Carter and nurse Hathaway) is about to have another send-off, and this time it’s not a traumatic chapter in which death, no matter how hard you fight it, wins again. Meredith Gray is leaving Gray Sloan and it’s hard to imagine if Seattle will bounce back from the loss.

Or if. Because, like in that movie that talked about how life goes on when life goes out, in the world of medicine, no one matters. Not at all. George died and the heart of the series seemed to stop. But it continued until Cristina Yang went to Europe and it seemed like the end of an era. But others (and others) arrived and the hospital continued to turn, despite the fact that Izzie Stevens was also gone. Despite Shepherd’s death and the greatest love story ever told. Despite the fact that not so long ago Alex Karev also hung up his cloak, and that too as a surprise. it will be season 20, and maybe life will continue in the emergency room and in the operating rooms that experienced the intern who became the best fictional doctor.
