Bitcoin Suisse is one of the key players in the Zug crypto valley. The crypto service provider is now the victim of data theft. According to a statement from the Zug-based company, historical customer data may have been exposed in a so-called “social engineering” attack on a system that has not been used since 2018.
In a statement released over the Pentecost weekend, the company assured that the security of client assets and Bitcoin-Suisse-Online were not compromised in any way. No user passwords or two-factor authentication (2FA) details were disclosed by customers. All other systems and business operations are also not affected in any way.
Initial assessment of the event indicates that it was “a limited amount of archived customer data (eg, correspondence) from 2013 to early May 2018”. A task force was formed to comprehensively analyze the situation and examine possible impacts. And most importantly, to prevent the recurrence of such an event in the future. Bitcoin Suisse works closely with cybersecurity experts and responsible authorities. Potentially affected customers were also notified.
To be clear: In the case of a “social engineering” attack, employees are often manipulated into handing over sensitive information to attackers. (pbe/SDA)
