Big hits in tourism have become very rare these days – VS one is about to open in Zermatt: with the Matterhorn Alpine Crossing, the Zermatt Bergbahnen is building the highest pass in the Alps by cable car. It is a continuous and year-round link between the world resort town and the Italian winter sports resort of Cervinia.

From Klein Matterhorn to Testa Grigia, the last and missing piece of the puzzle is 60 million francs. Mountain railways opened the first phase from the dry footbridge to the Klein Matterhorn in 2018. Cost point: also 60 million Swiss francs.

The tourist resort has dreamed of a direct connection to Italy for 80 years. It will now open on July 1 and is intended to push Zermatt further in terms of tourism. Tourist supremacy that scares some locals from being invaded by tourists. The Italy connection aims to attract more guests flying to Milan for European trips from distant markets.

CEO Markus Hasler (64) voices these concerns on the mountain railways’ official info channel: “Affordability strategy promotes experience for individual travelers, not mass or transit tourism.” There are also small groups within sight of mountain railways, as a spokesperson explained when asked by Blick.

The prices for crossing the Alps are actually quite expensive. Elsewhere, however, summiters are forced to dig deep into their pockets. Blick provides price comparison.

A single trip costs 156 francs and takes an hour and a half. “The Matterhorn Alpine Crossing experience is a premium offer and fits into Zermatt Bergbahnen’s current price strategy,” explains a spokesperson. It is cheaper in autumn (200 francs) and in winter (172 francs). Children under 9 travel free. Teens get 50 percent off, as do general subscription (GA) or half-fee card holders.
