Two passengers wanted to take two ensaïmadas, a traditional Mallorcan pastry, from Mallorca in their hand luggage: but Irish airline Ryanair asked them to pay 45 euros each. As the Guardian wrote, passengers did not want to pay and left their cake at the airport.
The cake door now has ramifications for the Balearic government: Tourism Minister Iago Neguerela, 43, held a government meeting scheduled for this week with the airline and the local confectioners’ association. He urged the airline to “defend local products and avoid any form of discrimination”, he told the Guardian.
Pep Magraner, President of the Confectioners Association, says all other airlines will allow their passengers to carry two ensaïmadas: “It’s only an issue with Ryanair, but we’re talking about a lot of flights here, especially to mainland Spain. ensaïmadas are coming.”
What bothered confectioners in particular: Ensaïmadas bought at the duty free shop at the airport could be taken with them at no additional cost – and they came mainly from bakeries from suppliers outside of Mallorca. From the bakers’ perspective, this is a clear competitive disadvantage. (smt)
