Migros customers are uncomfortable: Organic is mandatory instead of cheap products

Organic is exploding. Around 4 billion Swiss francs are sold annually in Switzerland along with organic food. According to the figures of the Biosuisse association, its market share was 11.2 percent in 2022.

The trend towards organic food means cheaper standard products are disappearing from the shelves. For example, at Migros, as Sonntagszeitung reports. Migros is currently expanding its organic product range with more than 5000 products.

Because space is limited, traditional products have to give way. This situation has recently caused controversy among customers on Migros social network Migipedia. The M-Classic banana quark has gone out of range and only organic banana quark is currently available, causing resentment.

This is costly because consumers have to pay 46 percent more for organic quark. And not everyone can afford or afford the higher prices.

No place for all items

Migros’ reaction to anger wrote on its Migipedia page, “It is important for us to be able to offer all kinds of organic products for sale.” “However, shelf space does not allow us to stock every product twice – i.e. standard and organic quality.”

Therefore, in order to create space, you must decide which products to exclude from the series in each case. As Sonntagszeitung writes, Migros also has other products of only organic quality. For example, different fresh herbs.

Consumer protection begs for freedom of choice

The Consumer Protection Foundation is also uncomfortable with cheap products being pushed off the shelves. Managing director Sara Stalder criticizes that the surcharge for organic products is too high and incomprehensible to large distributors. “It’s important for consumer protection, so it’s still a choice today.”
