EU Commissioner disappointed: Twitter drops code of conduct against disinformation

“But the obligations remain. You can run, but you can’t hide,” EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton wrote on Twitter Saturday night.

Beyond voluntary commitments, combating disinformation will become a legal obligation from 25 August under the so-called EU Digital Services Act (DSA). “Our teams will be ready to implement,” Breton wrote.

In February, the EU Commission released reports on how online platforms such as Google, Meta, Microsoft and TikTok enforced voluntary EU code of conduct. Brussels officials stated at the time that Twitter’s report lagged behind the others. In their reports, the platforms showed, among other things, how many fake accounts were created and used, or how fact-checks affect the spread of disinformation.

The Digital Services Act also aims, among other things, to enable platforms to remove illegal content from their sites faster. The requirements will apply across the EU from mid-February 2024, especially earlier for major platforms.

Breton said at the end of November that Twitter should step up efforts to comply with EU laws. The social network should introduce transparent user guidelines, significantly more moderate content, protect freedom of expression, and take decisive action against disinformation.

Twitter boss Elon Musk has always stressed that what he sees as excessive restrictions on freedom of expression on the platform should be removed. About two weeks ago, the tech billionaire announced that after a chaotic six months, he would hand over the top job at Twitter to advertising expert Linda Yaccarino. (SDA)
