Malaysian authorities raided the Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch stores. Watches decorated with rainbow colors of the LGBTQ movement were confiscated from the Pride Collection. LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay (English “gay”), bisexual, trans and queer – everything is absolutely taboo in Malaysia.
As reported by the online portal Malaymail, confiscations took place at eleven Swatch branches on 13 and 14 May. Many stores selling Swatch watches have received warnings.
Swatch CEO Nick Hayek (68) did not allow it. The brand has always produced colorful watches that represent diversity and celebrate people from all walks of life.
“Swatch is proud to be the canvas on the wrist of everyone around the world and the many artists who work with us,” Hayek told Malaysian lifestyle portal Options, which first reported on the harsh behavior of Malaysian officials.
“Swatch always spreads a positive message of joy of life,” says Hayek. “It has nothing to do with politics. We wonder how the Department of Home Affairs’ Regulation and Enforcement plans to seize the beautiful natural rainbow that appears thousands of times a year in the Malaysian sky.”
The LGBTQ movement and related values have been banned under heavy penalties in predominantly Muslim Malaysia. The Biel-based watch company confirmed the events to “Tages-Anzeiger”. Swatch Group wants to take back the seized goods through legal channels. (cut)
