E. Jean Carroll demands even more compensation from Trump

Jean E. Carroll updates his indictment against Donald Trump.

Two weeks after Donald Trump (76) was sentenced to millions for sexual harassment and defamation, plaintiff E. Jean Carroll (79) has called for an even harsher sentence for the former US President. Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, sought “very significant punitive damages” in an updated lawsuit filed in New York on Monday, citing statements made by Trump on CNN just a day after the verdict.

On May 10, the former president once again denied Carroll’s rape allegations and also insulted the 79-year-old boy during a live CNN public debate in front of millions of viewers. “This is a made-up story, a made-up story,” Trump said. Carroll is a “crazy”.

“Trump’s defamatory statements after the verdict show the depth of his grudge against Carroll,” writes attorney Kaplan. “It’s hard to imagine an act of defamation that could be more motivated by hatred, malice, or malice.” This supports the call for “significant punitive damages” to punish Trump, prevent further defamation of Carroll, and deter others from doing similar things.

Trump convicted for the first time

The lawsuit seeks at least $10 million in damages and an undisclosed amount of punitive damages from Trump. In the United States, civil litigation usually consists of compensatory damages for damages suffered, as well as punitive damages intended to serve as a deterrent and punitive.

On May 9, a New York jury sentenced Trump to $5 million in damages and compensation for sexual harassment and defamation of Carroll. With the decision in the highly anticipated civil lawsuit, Trump, who wanted to reclaim the White House in the 2024 presidential election, was tried for the first time on allegations of sexual violence.

Carroll updates complaint

Carroll accuses Trump of raping her in the dressing room of a luxury department store in New York in the spring of 1996. The longtime columnist for Elle magazine made his accusation public only in 2019, when Trump was president. Trump accused Carroll of lying and said he wasn’t “his type”. Carroll later sued the Republican in New York for libel, suing him for alleged rape and again for libel in a second lawsuit last November.

The decision of 9 May concerned this second case. The new punitive damages claim Monday in response to Trump’s recent comments on CNN is part of the update on the first case. Due to legal disputes, no trial has yet been made in this process. (AFP/chs)
