The long driveway hit Zurich Airport over the weekend: Monday morning, a queue of several hundred meters in front of passport control winds through the arrivals and transit area at Zurich Airport, as a Blick video shows.

If you have a Swiss or EU passport, you can go to automatic passport control without waiting in line. Anyone who comes from a third country and enters the Schengen area this Monday morning will have to be patient.

Travelers from London, Canada and Co.

Upon request, the airport may be informed of normal operation on the driveway “with sometimes longer waiting times during the busiest hours of the day”. A queue hundreds of meters long – normal operation?

The Zurich cantonal police, which is responsible for border controls at the airport, are also unable to provide further details as to why there was such a queue on Monday morning. “When there is a high passenger volume, waiting times cannot always be avoided, especially during peak travel hours,” he says.

Such queues are especially likely when several large aircraft from overseas land in rapid succession. For example, an Airbus A380 can take about 500 passengers. If they all get to passport control at the same time, there’s a bottleneck there – but this usually disappears again after a short while.

Judging by the arrivals boards at Zurich Airport, at the indicated time, several planes from London, Turkey, the USA and Canada, among others, landed in Zurich – all departure points outside the visa-free Schengen area.

Contrary to the airport’s good reputation

However, the picture travelers saw on Monday morning doesn’t quite fit Zurich Airport, which boasts of its “high quality”, “short transfer routes” and “reliability of processes” to earn it an “excellent reputation”. ”. .

Swiss praises its main airports twice on its website: “With short transfer times and direct connections, changing trains in Zurich is quick and efficient.” And also: “Nowhere else do passengers departing, transiting and returning feel as comfortable as they do here.”

It is questionable whether the hundreds of passengers waiting at passport control on Monday morning were so comfortable. At the start of Ascension Weekend, some passengers were annoyed by the longer wait times at Zurich Airport. The airport served an average of 85,000 passengers per day via the ramp.
