In terms of users, the social media platforms Facebook (belonging to the Meta group) and YouTube (owned by Google) rank high. This is followed by the news service Whatsapp and Instagram, which is also owned by Meta, and the Chinese services WeChat and Tiktok. Twitter, despite a strong media presence due to its controversial owner, Elon Musk (51), follows Snapchat and other services from Asia that are little known in this country.

Now Twitter is threatening to lose more ground. Shortly after Elon Musk expressed his distrust of rival Whatsapp, new details have surfaced about Meta’s plans for a Twitter alternative. Focus on Instagram: Users will soon be able to post Twitter-like posts via a new, text-based Instagram platform.

a new app

California professor and social media expert Lia Haberman reported in the Substack newsletter that the new Instagram app is codenamed P92, or alternatively Barcelona. Users can log in there with their Instagram username and password. The app automatically gets followers, bio, verification and more from Instagram. The new app has a feed where you can create text posts of up to 500 characters with links, photos and videos.

In a marketing slide posted by Haberman, you can see the new hybrid of Instagram and Twitter. Haberman explains that the new app should have improved moderation controls, meaning who can reply to a post or link an account, and compatibility with other platforms is also planned. One of them is Mastodon, the Twitter alternative that has benefited the most from Musk’s Twitter turmoil so far.

Is it already available in the summer?

It looks like the new app is being tested live on Meta. It’s been secretly accessible to selected people for months. It looks like the new app will go live in June.

The fact that this is currently being made public via Substack should further anger Musk as he has recently taken legal action against the blogging platform.

Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg (39) and Instagram have not publicly commented, and so far nothing has been heard from Musk. But Musk’s problem is clear: If you already have a large number of followers on Instagram, the text-based Instagram app will give you a news service where you don’t have to try to find more followers first.
