Aviation is not coming to rest right now. The already tense nerves of many passengers are further strained by countless strikes. Flight disruptions in Germany and Italy most recently caused problems.
Now following Spain: Air Europa pilots represented by the union Sepla (Sindacato de Pilotos de España) 22/23. May 25/26 May 29/30 May and 1./2. June strike in Spain. It is not yet certain whether there will be actual strikes on these dates. The union demands a salary increase for all Air Europa pilots.
The strike will affect many Spanish cities. Swiss passengers also have to reckon with disruption: Air Europa flies twice a day from Zurich to Madrid and from there to numerous other destinations such as Latin America. Even after the strike has ended, disruptions can occur as the airline clears accumulated passengers and reorganizes the aircraft and crew.
This wouldn’t be the first strike: At the start of the year, Air Europa went on strike, affecting more than 600 flights to and from Spain.
If you fly Air Europa on one of the planned strike days, you must immediately make sure that the flight will actually take place, unless the airline has informed you beforehand. When flying home, you must not leave the accommodation until the flight is confirmed. Sufficient time should be allowed at the airport.
Airlines are tired of many strikes. The European Airlines lobby group urges the European Commission to do more to reduce the impact of strikes on travel. Among other things, airlines propose mandatory arbitration with air traffic control unions before calling for a strike.
