The current housing shortage is making Christina P.* (59) nauseous. She has been looking for a new flat for months for herself, her son (22) and her two cats. handshake Failed! In an interview with Blick, P. recalls that everything looked very different when he last moved house in 2020.

At that time, the Zurich woman could choose from six apartments and take any of them. “Thank God Corona also had its advantages. Nobody wanted to prevent it.” Now he is intensely looking for a 3-room flat with living space for less than 2,000 francs. In the countryside, preferably in the country.

“There were 50 other people interested in the last apartment,” says Christina P. “Even double earners without pets have little chance of success. With two cats, the situation is almost hopeless,” complains P.

Cats need fresh air

Christina P. currently lives in Adlikon near Regensdorf ZH and takes her cat Ari on a leash every day. If he could stretch a net onto the roof terrace to keep Ari from falling, it wouldn’t be necessary. However, the site administration does not allow this. Christina P. has been living with her daughter (24) and son (22) in a spacious 4.5-room flat for three years.

“I’m an animal lover and I can’t confine an animal in an apartment.”Christina P.* from Zurich (59)

A tomcat and a cat – Ari and Luna – have also been living with them since last fall. “We took two females as house cats. Ari was later revealed to be a man. He needs a lot of exercise as a freelancer.” Therefore, Ms. P. is looking for a new flat. Ari should be able to go out on his own. Christina P.: “I am an animal lover and I cannot confine an animal to the apartment.” Also the apartment should be cheaper than the existing one.

Because right now Ms. P. and her two grown children share the monthly rent. Now her daughter wants to set up a communal flat in Zurich with a friend. Therefore, her daughter will no longer contribute to the rent in the future, and the housing budget will become even tighter.

Farther from the city than ever before

P. knows what it means to act. He grew up in the Schwamendingen district of Zurich, then lived in five different apartments in Zurich and Dübendorf ZH until he moved to Zurich Unterland in 2016. “The price-performance ratio in the city is no longer right,” she says.

And she adds: “As a girl, I could never have dreamed of living in the country.” Even though Schwamendingen was still very rural in his childhood. Now the situation is different. He learned to appreciate the countryside. And he likes to have a garage space. “I sometimes spent hours in the city looking for a parking space in the blue zone”.

closer to the workplace

His first flat in Zurich-Affoltern cost 850 francs. He then paid 1,650 francs for a 4.5-room apartment in Zurich-Oerlikon. The educated business woman, now working as a nanny, is disturbed by the high apartment prices in the city of Zurich. She says: “Today you pay 4,000 to 5,000 francs for a hole in the city. I would never pay for this. Not even if I have money!”

Your next flat should no longer be in Zurich Unterland. He wants to move closer to his two workplaces, one of which is in Oetwil am See ZH. The traffic jam on the A1 gets on their nerves, the commute is long and tiring. And he’s already looking forward to Ari being able to walk around the house by himself and keep the leash in the closet. If he finds a suitable apartment.
