It will again be noisy and crowded on the roads of Switzerland during Ascension Day and at Pentecost next week. Many use the long weekend for a short trip south or abroad. A sheet metal avalanche accumulated in Gotthard early Wednesday. But disappointment threatens not only while waiting with whining kids in the backseat, but also at the gas station. If you want to save money, you should not set off aimlessly, otherwise you will have to pay the bill at the gas pump.

Only in Switzerland can drivers easily save 20 cents per liter if they are looking for a cheap gas station and don’t refuel at an often expensive highway gas station.

According to data from the Swiss Touring Club, a liter of Breifrei 95 in Switzerland averages 1.84 CHF per liter. Depending on where you’re going, it makes sense to start with a half-empty tank and only fill it when you cross the border. There is also the potential for savings compared to the cheapest gas stations in Switzerland, after all there are cheap and expensive providers abroad as well. Blick provides petrol price comparison.

Huge savings potential in Austria

Austrian neighbors may turn green with envy when they see the significantly high mountains in Switzerland. But looking at fuel prices at gas stations should more than make up for it. A liter of unleaded 95 costs only 1,512 francs. That makes a CHF 19.70 difference for a 60-liter tank fill. The savings potential for diesel drivers is even greater. Therefore, no one going to Austria should refuel more than is required in Switzerland.

The heaven of diesels Germany

On the way to Germany, petrol car owners can safely refuel in Switzerland. In its northern neighbor a liter of unleaded 95 costs an average of 1,827 francs, saving 80 centimeters for a 60-liter tank fill. The situation is completely different for diesel vehicles: a liter is 38.5 centimeters cheaper in Germany. This is 23.10 francs for 60 liters.

Gasoline for almost the same price in Italy

If you prefer to head south after the rainy season and hope to see the sun in Italy, you can safely fill your petrol engine in Switzerland and save about 1.10 francs on a tank fill. Diesel vehicles, on the other hand, save an average of 13.25 francs per 60 liters in Italy. You can drink so much espresso in Italy that you can’t sleep through the entire Ascension weekend.

If you go to France, you fill it there

France is especially popular in Switzerland via the Auffahrt. This is unlikely to be due to petrol prices, since a liter of unleaded 95 costs only slightly less in the neighbor than at home (1,806 francs). Potential savings on a full tank: CHF 2.05. You get two croissants in a cheap bakery. Once again, the savings potential for diesel drivers is significantly greater at CHF 18.60 per tank. At least that’s a whole breakfast.

Balkans: Slovenia Cheat

When traveling to the Balkans, a lot of money can be saved with the right travel planning. The best thing to do is to fill up in Switzerland, fill up some in Italy, and then drive almost empty to Slovenia. There you can buy petrol for 1,353 francs per liter and continue to the Balkans, where petrol is more expensive than 1.50 francs per liter. By filling a Slovenian tank, you save 29.20 francs compared to Switzerland. If the country you are going to is Macedonia, you can go on very cheap trips for 1.22 CHF per liter.
