Good wages can be obtained in the construction industry without an academic education.

The Blick article on the 2023 wage research of the FH Schweiz association attracts great attention. The interaction between education level and wage levels is indisputable. But even with the simpler jobs, there are certainly good payoffs, as some readers have complained – assuming determination and a desire for more training.

Example? According to Unia’s GAV overview, the average salary of a 35-year-old car dealer with a master’s degree working full-time in the canton of Bern is CHF 9,200 per month. It’s about 120,000 francs a year at 13 months’ wages. Similar to the FH study, these values vary by region. The best fares are in the Zurich region and the lowest in Ticino.

With a degree from a university of applied sciences, fees are still slightly higher. But even with a master’s degree or higher professional training, you are already “with the people”.

Valuable construction industry

You can also earn good money in the construction industry. “The construction industry pays the highest salaries to craftsmen worldwide,” says Matthias Engel, spokesperson for the Swiss Builders Association (SBV). According to the Federal Statistical Office, the average salary in a full-time position in Switzerland is CHF 6,665 (2020 figure). This is 7,610 francs, almost 1,000 francs higher for all site personnel in the main construction works. This includes expenses and the like.

According to Engel, foremen’s average salary is 8,400 francs (including one share of 13th month’s salary, excluding expenses or allowances) – and the site manager’s salary is in the five-digit range. However, this is not statistically aggregated by the SBV.

“The common stereotype that you can make a career in just a suit and tie is simply not true,” Engel says. The higher the position in the construction industry, the greater the demand for skilled workers.

Basically, interest in construction work is increasing again among young people. According to Engel, young people realize that construction jobs also offer a wide variety of opportunities for advancement. But one more thing is clear here: Those who continue their education increase their wages significantly.

That’s what the expert says

However, it is not only academic education that determines the level of wages. Timon Forrer, 42, Director of consulting firm Kienbaum, says: “First of all, pricing is determined primarily on the basis of supply/demand.” This means that particularly sought-after functions are charged at a higher rate, regardless of educational requirements.

In addition, age is still a critical factor, although more and more companies are basing their compensation decisions primarily on employee function, track record and potential. Other determining factors, according to Forrer, are whether a function takes on a leadership role, industry, company size and location.

Offers sales and IT opportunities

But where can you earn so much without an academic education? “Many sales functions do not require any academic training,” Forrer says. Salaries can be achieved in this field that can significantly exceed classical academic job profiles in most industries.

Sales compensation systems are often designed for performance. “Successful salespeople can earn an annual salary of more than 150,000 francs a year,” Forrer says. A sales representative with many years of experience can easily earn a gross salary of CHF 140,000. Even a head of property/facility management for 150,000 francs.

When it comes to IT profiles, too, the expert is increasingly observing that companies are willing to hire employees without academic qualifications and, above all, pay attention to their skills. “With the right performance and more training, you can earn CHF 100,000 and more per year, even with a specialist career,” Forrer concludes. According to figures from Kienbaum, there are 94,000 francs for a senior IT supporter and 132,000 francs for the management of an IT customer service.

Finally, it is necessary to mention his managerial career at this point. “Here, too, you can already earn more than 100,000 francs a year as a team leader in many fields without an academic training.”
