There are days and weekends when heavy traffic is expected. These include Ascension and Pentecost. Because many people seek sun and a few days of relaxation in the south. It’s time to travel again – and this is especially evident in front of Gotthard. Ordinary traffic jams are likely to occur in many places.

• Route between Chiasso-Centro and Chiasso-Brogeda border crossing
• Motorway sections of the A1 Bern-Zurich motorway

In addition, congested traffic breaks should be given on long journeys. There should be no shortage of provisions such as food and drink. Traffic congestion reports (radio, internet, SRF traffic applications, TCS) should be followed immediately. It’s rarely worth leaving the highway to avoid traffic jams – travel time is usually significantly longer.

Avoid traffic jams

The Swiss Alps passes offer many opportunities to avoid traffic jams in the Gotthard tunnel. The most common alternative is the San Bernardino route via the A13. First of all, passengers from Basel, Zurich and Eastern Switzerland travel faster via the A13 when the waiting time in the Gotthard tunnel is at least one hour.

If there is a lot of traffic in front of the Gotthard access road, the journey can be started via the Gotthard Pass. Schöllenen Gorge is open from Friday noon until Sunday evening.

From Bern, the journey can also be started via the winding Grimsel and Nufenen passes.

Travelers from western Switzerland and the Bern-Solothurn region can travel to Simplon Pass or Grosser St. They can also choose the Bernhard route. With the latter you can choose between the tunnel and the toll road, but the toll through the tunnel is toll.
