Anyone traveling by plane from Zurich during the spring break should remember: huge queues at the security checkpoint and waiting times of up to two hours – early in the morning! The queue in front of the security control almost extended to the baggage claim area. Passengers are uncomfortable, staff at Zurich Airport are full.
Now comes the next public holiday, Ascension weekend and Pentecost. Euroairport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is proactively warning passengers in a media broadcast on Monday. “Very high numbers of passengers” are expected. This inevitably leads to longer waiting times at both exit and entry checkpoints.” We therefore “strongly” recommend arriving early.
Zurich Airport also expects more passengers in the next few days. Those in charge expect 85,000 passengers per day during Ascension weekend. In 2022 it was 72,000 a day – but in 2019, even 94,000 a day before the pandemic.
“Because of the scheduling data, May was slightly better at the security checkpoint than spring break,” media spokeswoman Bettina Kunz writes when asked by Blick. “At the moment, however, there may be longer wait times spread across the days than you are used to in Zurich.”
Zurich Airport therefore urges passengers to arrive two to three hours before departure. “Arriving more than three hours before departure is not recommended, as this may delay the pickup of passengers leaving on time,” says Kunz.
Zurich Airport seeks help from passengers to make sure everything runs as smoothly as possible. If possible, you should do everything online in advance and travel with little hand luggage. “If you prepare well before it’s your turn at the security check, you’ll save time: Put the allowed liquids in a clear, resealable plastic bag beforehand and remove the electronics from your hand luggage.”
Finally, there will also be interaction between airport staff and passengers on Ascension Day and Pentecost. And a little patience also helps to enjoy the journey before you leave.
