The NCSC wrote Friday that social media accounts in particular are a popular target for hackers, for example, to blackmail users or use compromised accounts to sell advertisements for investment scams.

The Cyber ​​Security Center received a total of 34,527 reports last year. 85% of them come from the public, 15% from companies, associations and authorities.

The reports relate to various forms of fraud. Fake threatening emails on behalf of law enforcement, so-called fake blackmail emails, account for almost a third of reports. Other commonly reported types of fraud include CEO fraud and bill manipulation fraud.

Ransomware reports remained stable, accounting for almost half of all reports in the malware category. About one-third relate to private individuals and two-thirds to companies.

The NCSC warns that even as digitalization advances, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular do not take cybersecurity seriously enough.

A large number of computers are interconnected via network interfaces. Processes such as order processing, planning, production and logistics are increasingly intertwined and digitally controlled. This increases the number of systems that can be accessed from the Internet and therefore need to be protected as best as possible.
