And suddenly fast! For many years, electric cars were mocked and seen as a dream by eco-fundis, but they are currently having a blast. Tesla Model 3, VW ID and Skoda Enyaq top the sales charts in Switzerland. Only: Every all-electric car needs a charging station when the batteries are flat. However, there are not enough of them in Switzerland. The situation is likely to worsen over the next few years.

As early as 2035, more than half of all passenger cars – 2.8 million! – Become a pluggable vehicle in Switzerland. This means that the charging infrastructure must be largely completed in twelve years. This is the result of a study submitted by the Swiss Federal Energy Office (SFOE). Conclusion: Switzerland needs a mix of different charging options. In addition, the development of charging infrastructure in rental properties will be encouraged.

Blick answers the top 10 questions on the subject:

charging at home

According to the research, electric vehicles should be able to be charged at special stations in existing parking spaces in homes as much as possible. Home charging will continue to meet the needs of electric vehicle owners in the future. This means that by 2035, up to two million dedicated charging points must be built in Switzerland. Unlike landlords, tenants depend on the landlord’s goodwill. Guidelines are urgently needed here.

How much does a dedicated charging station cost?

Assuming there is enough space in a garage or outside parking lot, your own charging station costs between 700 and 2700 francs. However, the development of private charging infrastructure in buildings is not an absolute success, according to SFOE. In addition to incentives, planning and investment security are needed.

Do I need a permit for the charging station?

In most cases, not everyone who wants to install a charging station in the parking lot of a detached or multi-family home or office building needs a permit. The situation is different in commercial systems. They need permission. Anyone who creates a new car park and installs a charging system on it must obtain a permit.

Charging station as an attraction for shopping

Discounter Lidl and Swedish furniture store Ikea started with this. And it offered its customers in Switzerland the first charging stations for electric vehicles. Apparently with success. Because the competition did not last long. But it was upgraded in order. Migros has 300 parking spaces in 200 branches. The number of charging stations changes almost daily.

Are gas stations only for petrol and diesel?

Not anymore! Large gas station chains are painstakingly expanding their range. In the countryside, shopping malls and highway service stations. For example, at Shell in the Rosenberg shopping center in Winterthur ZH. Four new charging stations will be connected to the grid here in the next few days. The situation is similar across the country.

How much does a full battery cost?

As a rule, the full fare at high rates is 12 to 20 francs, depending on the model. Less than 10 francs at low tariff. But watch out! At fast charging stations, the price per kilowatt hour (kWh) is significantly higher on average, depending on the provider.

How long does it take to charge the battery?

The duration of a full charge depends on several factors: the charging power (in kW), the size of the battery, the heat generated during the charging process or the outside temperature. The rule of thumb for a range of 100 kilometers is:

advert
  • at home (with 3.7 kW): 6 hours
  • Parking spaces in underground garages, public stations (11 – 22 kW): 1 – 2 hours
  • Accelerated charging in public areas (larger charging stations, 50 kW): 30 minutes
  • Fast charging stations (150 kW): 10 minutes
  • High-performance fast charger (350 kW): few minutes

Are tenants entitled to an e-charging station?

One thing is clear: Tenants do not have the right to install a charging station. But if the landlord or management agrees, who pays for the installation costs? Depending on the contract, tenants have to cover all or part of the costs themselves. However, the landlord can bear these costs and reflect them in the rent.

Troubled Blue Zone

The situation is dangerous for car owners who do not have a charging facility, as their homes or businesses only have parking spaces in the blue zone. The study expects between 400,000 and 1,000,000 such add-on vehicles by 2035. For these, a generally accessible charging network is needed, as close as possible to the place of residence. By 2035 Switzerland will need up to 84,000 generally accessible charging points. The need will vary from region to region. For classification: There are currently only 10,000 stations open to the public.

Can I go on a holiday abroad by e-car?

Taking an electric vacation abroad is getting easier every month. An explosion of new charging stations can now be seen at French highway service stations. Efforts to create a Europe-wide network are also progressing. The largest international provider is Charge Now, with 140,000 charging stations worldwide. In Europe, Plugsurfing with 130,000 charging stations and New Motion with 125,000 charging stations are the largest charging station providers.
