Thus, you can catch a holiday opportunity in a short time.

The most beautiful corner of Tunisia’s capital, Tunis, Sidi Bou Said: You can still find bargains here.

Tui CEO Sebastian Ebel recently said there will be no last-minute offers this summer. This is surprising because just a few weeks ago, Hotelplan boss Nicole Pfammatter said that there are many short-term vacation options on Blick, some of which are cheap, and there are online ads here featuring last-minute deals, even from Tui. and it opens there.

It accepts a look at various organizer websites. Cheap offers are also attractive in a short time. About a week at Hotelplan, including half board at a five-star hotel in Egypt and a flight from Zurich for CHF 719 departing on May 25. However, travel prices for almost all countries are higher than in previous years.

This is not a contradiction. “Overall, prices in all destinations have risen, mainly due to inflation and generally higher maintenance costs,” said Kuoni spokesperson Markus Flick. But without demand, destinations with large hotel capacity will likely lower prices in the short term to increase occupancy. “This trend is not yet visible for now,” Flick says, so expect fewer bargains this summer. Especially as demand for holiday travel has returned to pre-pandemic levels, but supply is still slightly below – in terms of flight capacity, for example.

Still, there are opportunities for bargaining. “There’s still room everywhere at the moment and yet we’ll be able to find a few vacation deals soon – some with a very attractive price-performance ratio,” said Hotelplan spokesperson Bianca Gähweiler. He and Flick agree that those who are flexible in terms of arrival and departure dates and resorts have the best chance of making a bargain. If you have a clear idea about when and where you want to spend your holiday, you should make a reservation as soon as possible.

Where is it cheaper and where is it more expensive?

But where are the still opportunities for bargaining? “Holidays in Rhodes, Turkey, Egypt or Tunisia are relatively cheap for the upcoming summer holidays,” says Gähweiler. Cruises for families with children can also be relatively inexpensive, as some shipping companies allow children to travel for free. Flick agrees: “Tunisia, Egypt, and the Turkish Riviera are the regions most likely to find cheaper offers for short-term bookings due to the decline in holiday guests from Russia.”

According to Gähweiler, holidays in Crete, Cyprus, Portugal, the USA or Canada are relatively more expensive and therefore less attractive to bargain hunters. Flick names Crete and the Spanish Costa del Sol as places less likely to operate at last-minute prices.

the market works

But lately, there have also been criticisms of bargain prices in the travel industry. Globetrotter boss André Lüthi (61) said customers are used to very low price levels. However, the presence of bargain prices indicates that the market is still playing. Recently, airlines and hotels are increasingly faced with the accusation that they are now improving their margins at the expense of consumers in the wake of the pandemic issues.

This should be possible because consumers “swallow” information about supply chain and other issues and hardly question higher prices. A phenomenon that “Bloomberg” calls “excuse”.
