Especially in the summer months, the residents of the city spend more time in public spaces and the open-air gastronomy area expands. A study by the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences concluded that this «Mediterraneanization» did not lead to an increase in noise complaints and was generally welcomed. In recent years, both current regulations and pilot tests have not led to an increase in complaints.

The almost consistent positive evaluation in cities can be explained, among other things, by planability and transparency for residents and companies. Accompanying measures such as security services, public information and a noise hotline were of little use. However, they supported the adoption.

Extended hours are well received

In the study published Tuesday, Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne, Lugano, Lucerne, St. Gallen, Thun, Winterthur and Zurich were studied.

According to the study, in Western Switzerland, where very liberal rules were applied in the early stages, these are now being adjusted to strike a balance between nightlife and living. Increasingly, the opportunity for earlier closing times is being recreated in residential areas or on weekdays as the case may be.

For example, very liberal working hours are now restricted in Geneva. Approximately 1,500 terraces must be closed at midnight on weekdays at the latest. The closing times therefore correspond to the level of other Swiss cities studied.

In German-speaking Switzerland, however, there is a trend towards liberalizing the working hours of garden taverns. For example, a successful pilot project in Bern with the option to serve food outside until 2 o’clock was definitely approved after positive experiences. Basel has an arrangement that differs according to the immediate environment and neighborhood. (SDA)
