Yves Rocher closes all branches in Switzerland

What’s going on at the cosmetics giant Yves Rocher right now?

“Yves Rocher has decided on measures that will result in the gradual closure of Swiss boutiques over the coming months,” a company spokesperson told the AWP news agency on Tuesday from Swiss French-speaking television channel RTS.

The shower gel, cream and perfume maker did not say how many employees would be affected. However, about 50 people are likely to be affected. The spokesperson added that a voluntary social plan has been prepared for Swiss employees.

The spokesperson, who cited the economic difficulties as the reason for closing the branch, said, “The Yves Rocher brand has been struggling with serious problems in business life for two years.” The triggers for this were the health crisis after the corona pandemic and changes in consumer behavior.

Founded in 1959 and having its Swiss beginnings in 1971, Yves Rocher was initially a pioneer in plant-based cosmetics, but over the past two decades other brands have expanded into this niche. In February of this year, Yves Rocher announced the layoffs of around 300 people in France, primarily from its headquarters in Brittany.

Only the Yves Rocher brand should be affected by the measures. The Yves Rocher brand currently has 12 branches in Switzerland in Geneva, Lausanne, Vevey, Neuchâtel, Friborg, Bern, Sierra, Sion, Zurich, Lugano and Lucerne. In the future, Yves Rocher products will only be available in the online store or in independent cosmetics stores.

There are a total of nine brands owned by Groupe Rocher, including Petit Bateau, which has a store in Zurich and Lausanne. The group has recently generated annual sales of approximately 2.3 billion euros and employs more than 15,000 people in 114 countries.
