Sanctions for exceeding CO2 values sometimes backfire, according to the SFAO report released Wednesday. In 2020, Switzerland was among the countries with the most polluting new car fleets in a European comparison.

The purpose of the report is to evaluate the effectiveness of CO2 sanctions for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles registered for the first time in Switzerland. As a result, less polluting cars should be imported.

As the SFAO report shows, the sanctions paid have increased sharply since 2018, reaching CHF 28 million in 2021. That’s why SFAO made recommendations to the affected Federal Office of Energy (SFOE).
