Organoids are miniature living 2D or 3D replicas of human tissues and organs that scientists have created from human stem cells. They represent the biology of both humans and diseases more precisely than animal models. As Roche writes in the bulletin, these human model systems enable the discovery of new human biology, both healthy and diseased. Ultimately, according to Roche, these systems can be used to identify drugs more specifically for the patient concerned.
“Human model systems such as organoids are the future of our industry,” said Hans Clevers, head of pharmaceutical research and early development (pRED) at Roche and a pioneer in organoids. “They have the potential to improve nearly every step in the research and development of an innovative drug.”
Using these human model systems, the institute hopes to accelerate drug discovery and development by improving understanding of how organs work and how diseases develop. Ultimately, this will help medicines reach patients faster. This also makes it possible to test at an early stage which drug candidates are safe and which molecules work best in each individual patient.
According to the information given, scientists and bioengineers from academia and the pharmaceutical industry will work together at the institute in Basel. It is expected to reach around 250 scientists and bioengineers in the next four years.
