Storms become more intense and hailstones grow

Large hailstones: They are becoming more frequent and are damaging to plants and vehicles. (icon image)

This emerges from the damage statistics released by Axa on Wednesday. He counted 38,000 claims in 2022, resulting in a cost of 144 million francs. According to reports, costs have fluctuated between CHF 52 million and CHF 299 million per year since 1997. The highest damage was recorded in 2021.

Axa writes that no trend can be drawn from this. To do this, a longer period of observation will be required. But storms are now occurring faster than in the past, and their intensity has also increased. There is more heavy rain and more frequent large hailstones. This created new dangers: Heavy rain in densely populated areas can turn streets into dangerous rivers and flood underground parking lots.
