Valais comes in last in terms of median net household income.

Valais is a place of extremes: the canton has no more than four thousand in any Alpine region. At least since the TV series “Tschugger” all of Switzerland knows that the people of Valais speak absolutely the country’s most incomprehensible and, as some claim, the most beautiful dialect.

The most powerful man in world football, FIFA boss Gianni Infantino (53) was born here. And when it comes to average household income, Valais is also at the top, at least if you flip the picture. According to a study published this week by Bank Cler, the median income of households in Valais is CHF 42,400. Swiss Income Monitor is based on Federal Tax Administration data available to Blick.

The bank compared the average net income of households. For this purpose, net income such as wages, pensions, alimony or capital income is deducted from cost items such as taxes, professional expenses, interest on debt, maintenance contributions or payments made to column 3a.

Valais is catching up, Ticino is stagnating

By this calculation, a Valais household has 26 percent, or CHF 11,200 less than the Swiss average in their pocket. The poor performance of the canton of Valais is due to the above-average representation of low-wage sectors such as the accommodation sector. But Valais is catching up. In the period analyzed between 2007 and 2019, the average net income per household increased by 10.1 percent. This is double that in the canton of Basel-Landschaft and only slightly less than in Zurich.

Industry is becoming more and more important in Valais, where more generous salaries are paid. In recent years, the Lonza location in Visp has also boomed, possibly contributing to a further increase in household income along with other companies.

The people of Ticino are second to last at CHF 44,600 per household. Low wage sectors are also very common in the south canton. In addition, the large number of cross-border travelers and the close ties with the Milan economic zone drive fare levels down. Unlike Valais, household incomes stagnated in Ticino between 2007 and 2019.

Every tenth Zug digit comes to 200,000 francs

At the top of the ranking are the cantons of Zurich, Basel-Landschaft and Zug. The net income of Zurich households is CHF 59,700. Industry, financial center and IT companies often pay high salaries. The fact that Basel-Landschaft is just ahead of Zurich is mainly due to its attractive tax policy. Low-tax communities attract high-income people who make a living, for example, in the pharmaceutical industry or in insurance companies in the canton of Basel-Stadt. For similar reasons, tax haven Zug ranks first with CHF 68,400.

The gap between the cantons is even greater when it comes to the highest household incomes. In Valais, the richest ten percent of households earn a median CHF 106,200. In Zug it is CHF 199,900. On average in Switzerland, the top ten percent comes to 131,100 francs.
