Amazon may soon offer more products in Switzerland…

On May 3, the Swiss Amazon team will meet potential retailers at Volkshaus Zurich. That’s what it says on the website of the Swiss Trade Association. Amazon wants to discuss “strategic initiatives”. There’s also talk of “long-term results” and a “stronger relationship.”

Bernhard Egger (55), Managing Director of the Swiss Trade Association, can only dream of one thing. “Actually, it might just be about Amazon wanting to deliver more products to Switzerland,” he told 20min.ch. First of all, Amazon probably wants to attract more retailers. Amazon currently only ships a few items to Switzerland, you have to order from abroad; for example via «amazon.de».

Swiss warehouse would be possible

For example, Amazon could set up a warehouse in Switzerland and take over the customs clearance process for third-party providers and affiliates on its platform, Egger says. This will reduce costs and it will be more attractive for third parties to offer goods in Switzerland.

In addition, industry tariffs will be abolished in 2024. Previously, EU traders who wanted to sell their goods in Switzerland had to declare their goods imported from third countries in the EU and Switzerland. Customs in Switzerland is now gone. This would also put Amazon at risk. However, the obligation to file an import customs declaration and to declare customs tariff numbers will remain.

If Amazon really settles in Switzerland soon, Digitec Galaxus will have to rally up hot. Currently, approximately 500 retailers offer their products on Migros’ subsidiary platform.

Post can be partner

Amazon can work with the post office for a customs clearance platform or its own warehouse. When asked by “20min.ch”, Swiss Post replied that May 3 was an affiliate event only Swiss Post participated in. “We’re showing Swiss retailers how they can get started on Amazon and how we can support them with customs clearance and shipping abroad for their goods.”

Amazon itself did not want to say much about the event. The shopping experience for customers in Switzerland is constantly being optimized: “For example, we are constantly expanding the product selection.”
