When the temperature outside rises above 30 degrees, going to the mall or the nearest store can provide a nice refreshment. Because there, air conditioning systems usually run at full throttle. But this consumes a large amount of energy, which we may be deprived of next winter.
There has been no power outage so far, but the danger could not be avoided. So that we don’t run out of energy next winter, the retail trade association wants to start saving electricity early in the summer: Swiss Retail urgently advises its members not to turn on air conditioners in stores during the hot season. “The benchmark probably won’t be cooling shops below 25 to 26 degrees Celsius,” association director Dagmar T. Jenni told “NZZ am Sonntag”. Deviations from this should only be made if necessary for operational or health reasons.
Jenni doesn’t quite know how cold the shops are usually in the summer. But it is usually below 25 degrees. So there is significant energy and cost savings potential. Jenni also recalls the role model function of retailers: “By using air conditioning systems in shops with restraint, we encourage people to do the same at home.”
The word has weight: Many stores have adopted recommendations such as no Christmas lights to save electricity in the winter. This also applies to Migros and Coop, which are not included in the umbrella organization. The two retail giants have implemented the measures anyway. (SDA/koh)
