Everyone wants to take off again, queues are getting longer at airports. Back then, like before Corona, flight prices increased significantly.
Corona was a nightmare for the aviation industry. Three years ago, airlines around the world had to get billions from the government to avoid going bankrupt. But today the pandemic is turning into a blessing for them. “Long-distance trips have become between 30 percent and 45 percent more expensive. “The price of a flight to Kathmandu has almost doubled,” André Lüthi (63), founder and chairman of Swiss individual travel specialist Globetrotter, told “NZZ am Sonntag”. “Airlines are taking advantage of the fact that Corona has ended devastating price competition,” Lüthi said.
As a result, long vacations on a distant continent become almost unaffordable, especially for families. “Medium-sized companies have a problem with long-distance travel,” explains Lüthi. Other travel agents feel this too. Compared to pre-Corona times, the number of passengers is up to 20 percent lower. Only higher prices help increase sales figures.
Airline Swiss also determined this: “In 2023, we expect prices to still be above pre-pandemic values. This is due to the still scarce supply and the resulting lower ticket prices.” And prices are likely to continue to rise. Because flying needs to become more sustainable – it costs billions of investments in new technologies. (SDA/koh)
