From now on, public transport will be controlled more frequently and more tightly.

Transport companies want to check more tickets on public transport again.

Spontaneously on the tram? Why buy another ticket? Chances of being caught are very low.

It seems that many unsubscribed travelers think so. This emerges from the numbers CH Media has received from various shipping companies.

Measurable increase in wage evasion

Accordingly, of the nearly 2.2 million passengers checked in by the Zurich transport company (VBZ) last year, about 60,000 were traveling without a ticket. That’s 2.7 percent of checked passengers. It cannot be deduced from this how high the actual number of wage smugglers is. What is clear, however, is that the number of wage evaders has risen: the rate of wage fugitives caught was 2.6 percent in 2021, compared to just 0.92 percent in 2017.

At Bernmobil, 2.2 percent of passengers were traveling without a valid ticket. In 2018, the number there was still 1.8 percent.

Finally, at Postauto AG, the rate of evaders is 4 percent. Between 2017 and 2019, that number was still around 3 percent. And in Basler Verkehrsbetriebe (BVB), the rate is now 3 percent; five years ago it was still 2 percent.

According to figures from the Swisspass Alliance, around 3 percent of all public transport passengers in 2019 were traveling without a valid ticket or with a partially valid ticket only. That means the industry loses double-digit millions every year – “which ultimately hurts all honest customers”.

More control again

Shipping companies see one reason for the rise in fare evasion, with many checks suspended during the corona pandemic. It’s over now. All shipping companies surveyed are currently planning increasingly efficient checks. The latter, for example, by checking more often, especially on notorious routes where there are a lot of toll smugglers.

Hope: Passengers should perceive increased, regular checks and therefore be more disciplined when buying tickets. The improvements are already noticeable – probably because there is more control again. (rae)
