More than 100 people arrested in protests in France

More than 100 people were arrested in protests in Paris alone, after the Constitutional Council gave the green light to French President Emmanuel Macron’s (45) pension reform. Bicycles, electric scooters and garbage cans were set on fire in the capital, the AFP news agency reported. Protests were also held in other cities, such as Marseille, Toulouse and Lyon, with hundreds of people participating.

In Lyon, police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators. In the western French city of Rennes, protesters set fire to the gates of a police station and a convention centre. Train traffic had to be stopped in Marseille due to the demonstrations on the rails.

Paris police reported that 112 people had been arrested by 22:30. Hundreds had gathered for previously unannounced protests.

More than a third of French people reject reform

That afternoon, the French Constitutional Council approved raising the retirement age in France from 62 to 64. The council also rejected the left opposition’s request for a referendum on reform. In France, there is no appeal against the decisions of the Constitutional Council.

More than two-thirds of French people reject pension reform. The protests have become more and more radical in recent weeks, since the pension reform law was passed in a legal constitutional trick. (AFP)
