One of the factors in the success of the mail order business is the possibility of returning unwanted goods, often even for free. But for customers, this convenience means a huge amount of work for providers: They have to check products and, if necessary, repackage or even discard them. This causes high costs. That’s why mail order companies are looking for ways to minimize returns.
Shipping giant Amazon, which is relatively small in Switzerland, is using a new and special method: it warns against purchasing certain items. As tech portal t3n points out, there is now an entry on product pages – but only in the US for now – for above-average returned items. With the “Informed purchasing decisions” tag, Amazon encourages customers to carefully read product reviews and also to look closely at images. Because if you had taken a closer look at the product description, things are often criticized that would make it unnecessary to order the product from the start.
Items with warnings include turntables and clothing that tend to have average or low ratings. At this time, it remains unclear what criteria Amazon uses to determine which products it considers “frequent returns”, or when users should expect a warning.
However, online sellers are having a hard time ending their generous return policy with long return periods. Customers must be kept in line. However, as buyers in Switzerland return about one in three packages, providers have to find new ways to stop the flood of returns. Finally, secondary processing of returns is time consuming. Amazon continues to sell some products in Germany under “Amazon Warehouse Agreements” or as used goods in its outlet store. It’s not uncommon for returns to end up as donations.
Then there is all the effort that also represents the ecological frenzy. The Amazon precaution can also be summarized as follows: check first and only then order, rather than vice versa. But that won’t be easy: Product descriptions, especially from third parties, are often vague or inconsistent.
