Based on retail wine purchases, a French household consumed an average of 29 liters of wine last year, 30 liters in 2021 and 32 liters in 2020, according to data from the publisher’s market research firm NielsenIQ. Spending on wine per household rose 1.6 percent year on year to 131 euros in 2022.
“Wine still has a place on the French table. However, like all other mass consumer goods, it suffers from the effects of inflation. The French are consuming less wine regardless of color, pushing the price range down,” NielsenIQ analyst Nicolas Léger told the broadcaster. 75 percent of households in France purchased retail wine last year, a steady rate since 2019.
According to the data, wine consumption increases steadily with age. People over 65 in France consume four times more wine than people under 35.
