Now Australia is also banning Tiktok on government phones

class=”sc-3778e872-0 cKDKQr”>

After countries such as the USA, the UK, Canada and New Zealand, now Australia, announced that the Chinese video platform Tiktok will be banned from using government employees on business mobile phones. Attorney General Mark Dreyfus said on Tuesday the decision was made on the advice of Australian intelligence agencies and would be implemented “as soon as possible”.

With over one billion users worldwide, Tiktok is especially popular among the younger generation. The short video service has already outstripped other networks like Youtube, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook in terms of time spent on it. Many government agencies initially wanted to use Tikzok to connect with younger demographic groups that were difficult to reach through traditional media channels.

Experts warn against espionage

The Tiktok video platform, run by a Chinese company, is controversial. At the end of February, the White House ordered that the app be removed from all US federal agency devices. France, the Netherlands and the EU Commission have also made similar decisions for their employees’ mobile phones.

Experts warn that the app could be used by the Chinese Communist Party for espionage or propaganda purposes. The Chinese government on Friday refused to urge Chinese companies to hand over personal user data collected abroad. (AFP)
