Health Minister Orazio Schillaci said this was in line with the “principle of attention”. In his own words, there is no “scientific evidence” that “consumption of synthetically produced foods has no harmful effects”.

Violation of the ban, which specifically targets the production of meat based on animal stem cells in the laboratory, will result in fines of up to 60,000 euros. Parliament must approve the law.

Coldiretti, Italy’s agricultural association, demonstrated outside the seat of government in Rome, demanding “no to synthetic food”. As a European pioneer in food quality and safety, Italy has a duty to protect companies and citizens. So far, there has been no application to authorize the production or marketing of such foods in the EU.

Prepared Mammoth Meat

By the way, in the Netherlands, scientists presented a large piece of meat from the extinct woolly mammoth. The Australian-based company Vow has exhibited the lab-grown meat at the Science Museum in Amsterdam.

The researchers first identified DNA sequences from the mammoth, supplemented them with genes from the African elephant, and then transplanted the whole thing into sheep cells. The company explained that the meat is not currently intended for food – more than 4,000-year-old protein from the mammoth must first be tested for food suitability. (SDA)
